Sleepover birthday fun

I didn't have a sleepover birthday party (as interesting as that would be . . . I wonder who I would invite!). My now 10-year-old teammate, Abby, did. I was "booked" to bake the cake. I baked a simple chocolate sheet cake Sunday night after church and the birthday girl came over Monday to help me decorate it in time for her party that evening.

I asked her, "How do you want to decorate your cake?"
She responded, "I don't know . . . just some random sprinkles maybe."

Random is not how I bake. So, we got on Google and looked at "sleepover" themed cakes and found an idea for a really cute one. But to really get it to work, we had to use fondant, a packet of which someone in my church "randomly" just gave. I had no idea how to use it. When in doubt, read the instructions on the box. It basically said to just roll the stuff out. Sounded simple enough. This particular kind of fondant came in the shape of a brick and looked like white plastic. It looked inedible and kind of toxic. But we rolled it out. It took me, Abby and her brother, Isaac, taking turns with the rolling pin, putting all of our weight into it, to get it to flatten. It was exhausting. But, the end result was a sleepover cake! Abby was thrilled with it and that's all that matters. :-)

Happy birthday to my little friend. I remember celebrating your 5th birthday with a tea party and now you're 10. Time flies.

So fun! I have always wanted to try a cake with fondant but whenever I need to make a cake I always chicken out. It always seems like more work than it's worth. I guess next time I get the urge I'll have to call for pointers :)

Oh my gosh! That is so amazing Kristi! I just love it SO much. So much that I feel like I need to find some little girls that need a sleepover just so I can provide the cake : )

Gretchen makes fondant from scratch. Isn't that girl amazing? I totally love her and I am SO jealous that I just read she is coming to visit. If I come to visit I would offer to cook too but lets just say I think you would decline my offer.

I will take us out to a restaurant and let someone else cook!
